Watch: Honolulu Officials Propose $460K Surfboard Storage Rack at Waikiki Beach

Honolulu's Waikiki is home to numerous popular surf spots that once housed surfboard storage lockers.

After several fires in the last few years destroyed the storage units, residents lost boards and now have a harder time hauling boards through the city streets to the water.

But it looks like new storage might be coming to Waikiki Beaches, with a hefty price tag of $460,000.

One of the surfers KITV spoke to lost two boards in the first fire, and two in the second.

He continues:

"While limited new storage has been provided. Many feel there's a serious need for more. Relief could be on the horizon. The city is currently considering a. new structure to house surfboards at Kuhio Beach worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"Wednesday, the Department of Parks and Recreation proposed a budget request of $460,000 at the Honolulu City Council meeting.

"It would go toward the planning, design, and construction of new surfboard lockers in the general vicinity of the one that recently burned down between Kuhio Beach and Kalakaua Avenue.

"If money is appropriated, it's currently unknown how soon the new storage facility would potentially open in Waikiki."
