Plenty of fitness influencers have tried following the on-screen exercise routines of popular animated characters like Goku from Dragon Ball Z, Saitama from One Punch Man, and even Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender. In a recent episode of his 'Would That Work Out?' webseries, YouTuber JaxBlade turns his attention to another action-packed staple of many childhoods—Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—and does his best to assess whether the martial arts tutelage those four heroes in a half shell received from Splinter would have any kind of benefits in real life.

JaxBlade notes that Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael each demonstrate mastery over a different weapons: twin sai blades, twin katana, bo staff, and nunchucks. Training with a weapon, he says, can actually help to increase your strength and balance.

"When you're handling a weapon, even a light one, it increases the load on your muscles and joints and helps them get stronger," he explains. "They're really great at building up your wrists and preventing them from getting injured. They also help you improve your speed, because speed is a combination of core stability, tendon strength, body positioning and muscle fiber makeup, and weapon training helps you build up all of this when done consistently."

In addition to this, he adds, working with weapons can enhance your hand-eye coordination, your overall stamina and muscle endurance, and perhaps most importantly, your mental agility. "Training becomes an intense mental workout the moment you pick up a weapon," he says.
