For many men, thinning hair and receding hair lines are a fact of life. But losing your hair doesn’t have to control your every waking thought. And if it does, sometimes it’s best to shave it all off—even after years of growing long locks.

In a recent video from YouTube channel Baldcafe, Dionyshs from Greece shares his hair loss journey, including footage of him shaving off his mid-back-length locks. The transformation from metalhead hair to buzzcut is truly something to see.

The 29-year-old says his hair loss started when he was 18 years old. To combat his thinning hair, Dionyshs says he tried medicinal treatments with little impact — and with undesirable side effects. That’s when he decided to grow out his hair into a lengthy mane to disguise his insecurity.

“When you have long hair, you can somehow hide it,” he tells host Harry James of Baldcafe.

But finally, the preoccupation with his hair became too much of a burden for Dionyshs. So he enlisted his cousin to shave off his thinning hair—and filmed the whole thing.

“I [could] hide it a little more—maybe one to two years more,” Dionyshs says of his thinning hair. “But I think you just have to accept it. Sometimes you have to change when you feel stuck. You have to make a change.”

He added, “We identify ourselves with this sort of stuff. But we are not our hair. We are a lot more than this.”

After taking the plunge, Dionyshs says he feels free from a full decade of worrying about his hair.

“When I looked at myself in the mirror, I thought that I would be shocked,” he tells James. “But I had [the idea of shaving my head] so much in my mind. I had processed this, so it was like I had already made that move.”

The transformation seems to have caused an instant change to his mental wellbeing. “In a few words, it was like a liberation from the constant thinking of how I will look tomorrow or the next month or the next year.”
