After the incredible success of The Avengers, any other Marvel team-up had to be just as good, if not better than the 2012 film. In 2014, when Guardians of the Galaxy premiered, it passed the high bar Marvel fans had. While The Avengers was nominated for one Academy Award (Visual Effects), Guardians grabbed two nominations (one for visual effects, and another for makeup and hairstyling). The tale of Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, and the rest of the crew wasn't just an origin story, but a self-contained thrill ride for both diehard Marvel fans and moviegoers looking for a fun time.
And now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which premiered on May 5, has its own hurdles to clear. The Guardians films' director James Gunn, has since departed Marvel to head the company's comic book competitor DC. We're all suffering from a bit of Marvel movie fatigue as post-Avengers: Endgame, we've yet to see another major payoff like The Avengers. For the Guardians third and final film (at least with this particular character lineup), a lot is at stake if they want to win over audiences.
Thankfully, reviews, including ours, are positive. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a solid farewell to the characters we've gotten to know over the course of nearly a decade. Even if you're dealing with a little Marvel fatigue, trust us. It's worth watching.
