Wednesday, the Tim Burton-produced Netflix show which takes the daughter of the infamous Addams Family and drops her into a boarding school mystery, dominated the pop culture conversation in the final months of 2022, thanks in no small part to that instantly iconic dance sequence. Set during a formal at Nevermore Academy, the laconic Wednesday (played by Jenna Ortega), who has up until now rejected pretty much any and all social interactions, surprises her classmates and prospective love interest by not only taking to the dance floor, but giving it her all in a series of deeply odd moves.
Ortega, who choreographed the number herself, has cited her influences for Wednesday's distinctive dancing style as including "Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and archival footage of goths dancing in clubs in the 80’s." And because this was 2022, it was mere moments before a new TikTok dance trend was born.
The song playing during the high school dance scene is 'Goo Goo Muck' by The Cramps, but when those moves made their way over to TikTok, the dance soon got set to another tune; a remix of 'Bloody Mary' by Lady Gaga. In fact, the trend proved so popular that the song—originally an album track from Gaga's 2011 album Born This Way—has been receiving considerable airplay, even charting in the Billboard Top 40, more than a decade after its release. To mark her enjoyment of the viral moment, Gaga herself even posted her own take on the Wednesday dance, complete with Ortega's hairstyle and an Addams Family-style black and white filter.
But the best ever version of the Wednesday dance might just belong to Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, who choreographed and performed an entire routine around it at the Russian Figure Skating Championships this week, complete with a costume based on the character's prom dress and a hand made up to look like Thing. Valieva begins her performance dancing to the original Addams Family theme song, then the score that plays over the opening credits of the Netflix series, before combining Ortega's instantly recognizable moves with some considerably more athletic flourishes to 'Goo Goo Muck' and 'Bloody Mary.'
