One of the buzziest films of 2022, and surely in Oscars contention, is Everything Everywhere All At Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ("the Daniels"). The film, per A24, "is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can't seem to finish her taxes." Soon, she's pulled into a multiverse where she must stop the destruction of the universe.
Yeoh's magnetic performance as Evelyn Wang is one of her best roles to date. "This story is not about me," Yeoh told Town & Country in the September 2022 cover story. "This story is about many people—mothers, aunties, women out there who walk by you in the supermarket unnoticed. They never have a voice. They’re never the superheroes."
The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., and Tallie Medel.
"It's impossible to deny what that film's done, and how they've made this insane film full of the biggest ideas, and the craziest storytelling," Daniel Radcliffe said of the Daniels creating Everything Everywhere All At Once. "But it's also still incredibly beautiful, and heartfelt, and funny, and fun the whole time. It's the best film I've seen in years." Radcliffe—who previously starred in the Daniels' first feature film, Swiss Army Man—added that the movie should be up for all of the Oscars.
At the Gotham Awards in November 2022, the film won best feature and best supporting performance for Key Huy Quan. "Oftentimes it is in independent films, where actors who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance, find their opportunities," Quan said in his acceptance speech. "I was that actor."
