The actor understood the impact Hagrid would continue to have on generations to come.
Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor well-known for playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series and Valentin Zukovsky in two James Bond films, as well as many other iconic roles, passed away on Oct. 14 at age 72.
After the announcement of his death, fans, friends, and coworkers have been sharing tributes to the late actor online, with many highlighting key moments of his stunning career.
In particular, an interview clip with Coltrane from the HBO documentary special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, has gone viral.
In the video, Coltrane described finishing the Harry Potter movies as "an end of an era."
He explained that he spent a decade playing Hagrid, saying, "It's 10 years of my life, and my children have grown up during it," referring to his two kids, Spencer and Alice McMillan.
But the part of the clip that made people so sentimental is when Coltrane emotionally discussed how Hagrid and Harry Potter will live on past him, stating, "The legacy of the movies is that my children's generation will show them to their children. So you could be watching it in 50 years time, easy."
He then added, "I'll not be here, sadly... but Hagrid will."
The moment was very emotional for fans when the special was first released at the start of 2022, but it's become even more poignant now after such a big loss.
Many fans shared the video on Twitter, commenting things like, "Wow this hits hard. Thanks for sharing," and "He may be gone but his performances will live on for years to come 👏 many people years from now will know who he is."
Another person said, "I’m currently crying over this. This man was my childhood the lovely giant and first person who gave Harry love when he didn’t had [sic] any in his childhood. This truly breaks my heart."
After finishing up his run as Hagrid in the films with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011, Coltrane went on to star in quite a few more projects before his death.
Most notably, he earned rave reviews for his performance in the miniseries National Treasure in 2016, for which he also won a handful of awards.
