• In a new video, Dr. Pimple Popper extracts solar comedones from a man's face.
• Solar comedones often form as a result of both sun exposure and excessive smoking.
• Typically they're benign, and fairly simple for a dermatologist to treat.

As Baz Luhrmann reminded some of us in a simpler time, it's a very good idea to wear sunscreen every day. And in her latest video, Dr. Pimple Popper shows us why: In an Instagram clip posted on Tuesday night in (belated) celebration of National Sunscreen Day, celebrity dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD, gives her fans an up close and personal look at what could happen when someone neglects their sun protection for too long.

The clip begins with the doctor wielding her trusty comedone extractor over the face of an older male patient. What look like blackheads at first glance, however, are actually solar comedones—also known as senile or smoker's comedones. These black spots, unlike the acne you get as a teen—are caused primarily by prolonged sun exposure. When you have a bunch of them together, the cluster referred to as Favre-Racouchot Syndrome, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

The condition—hence its other nickname—is often associated with people who have also smoked excessively, in addition to spending lots of time in the sun. Thankfully, despite how alarming it can seem at first glance, the condition is usually benign. In the clip, Dr. Lee treats the solar comedones, which she compares to "little shoots of black grass" and "little blackheads," in a pretty typical fashion, squeezing out the pus-like innards with ease before wiping it all away. As Dr. Lee says in the post's caption? Wear your sunscreen, kids.
