In a new Instagram video, Dr. Pimple Popper — aka, dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD — plucks a small cyst from the cheek of a patient with predictable precision. The patient is seen talking throughout the procedure, even while Dr. Lee is using a scalpel to cut into his cheek, showing the incredible skill of Dr. Pimple Popper.
The epidermoid cyst featured in this video is the result of an enlarged pore on the man’s cheek. This type of cyst—which is often filled with skin cells and keratin—commonly occurs on the face, neck, and back. Besides often being cosmetically undesirable, epidermoid cysts can be easily irritated and tender, making removal an appealing option.
In the procedure, Dr. Lee is able to remove the cyst in one piece, which is good news for the patient. Though a cyst “pop” may be more satisfying to a viewer, removing a cyst in one piece greatly decreases the chance it will return, as it’s guaranteed none of the sac wall remains in the patient’s skin.
After cutting out the small cyst, Dr. Lee stitches up the man’s cheek and sends him on his way. Dr. Pimple Popper is known for her talkative bedside manner, which is used to calm and distract patients. Yet keeping a patient chatting during a cheek excision is especially impressive—especially when removing a cyst in one compact piece.
