In a new Instagram video, Dr. Pimple Popper—aka dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD—pops a series of blackheads scattered around a man’s forehead. And these teeny tiny pops have an interesting backstory of bravery. Yes, these are more than merely satisfying pops.

In the clip, Dr. Lee uses a comedone extractor to push out the blackheads speckled across the man’s forehead. She says the growths are ready to go, with the derm only using light pressure to extract the pepper-like specks. Though skin concerns often are the result of genetics, these tiny splattered blackheads likely have a different origin, according to Dr. Lee.

“So you were a firefighter, and I do think being out there in all the soot and the smoke and being in the sun all the time can wreck havoc,” Dr. Lee tells the patient in the clip. Now that's fascinating.

A blackhead is a single pore filled with dead skin and oil—and, in this particular case, compacted soot—which forms a black “head” when exposed to air.
