For Fall 2019, Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to the 1950s, a significant time in Dior’s history, but she passed up the strictness of haute couture in favor of Teddy Girls in London and the street smarts of postwar dressing. “Sometimes, when we think about the ’50s, we will have an idea that’s more formal,” Chiuri told Vogue backstage after the show, noting that the Teddy Girls were not just cool, but that they styled themselves in a way that pulled from other eras, like Edwardiana, and other cultures, like American denim. On Chiuri’s runway, this translated into a hearty portion of buffalo plaid, nouveau Bar jackets, and tulle-trimmed bucket hats.

Backstage, Peter Philips created the ultimate “Polly Maggoo” eye with painted-on bottom lashes and a thick cat-eye on the upper lid. Do try it at home—in our exclusive video, Philips breaks down exactly how to get the look.

When it came time for the show, celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence and Karlie Kloss arrived in the garden of the Rodin Museum to take in the collection in a tent covered in Tomaso Binga artworks. Model Selena Forrest summed up the thesis of Dior’s latest best, “I think Maria Grazia promotes being strong, being masculine and feminine at the same time, and she always tries to make us women feel powerful.” Watch how the show came to be, here.
