Watch the Differences Between Jacob Elordi & Austin Butler’s Elvis Voices

He’s just left the building and Jacob Elordi’s Elvis voice is still turning heads. The 26-year-old Australian actor plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s biopic Priscilla based on his wife Priscilla’s memoir Elvis & Me. With the short amount of time between Coppola’s and Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis, many fans have compared Elordi’s portrayal of Elvis to fellow actor Austin Butler’s.

Many fans on the internet observed the differences between the two— as Elordi didn’t go to as extreme lengths as Butler for the role. “austin butler rewiring his whole body and voicebox to try and become elvis when the euphoria guy slides into it effortlessly. that’s so funny i,” one person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). However other fans are adamant about comparing the two as one wrote, “jacob elordi elvis and austin butler elvis are two extremely different performances and i feel like it’s way more interesting to talk about how their different methods fit their respective films than it is to do like, stan wars about it.”

Though the two movies are based on Elvis’ life, Priscilla focuses more on the private relationship between Elvis and his ex-wife. Priscilla was asked what it was like to see her life portrayed in such a way. “It’s very difficult to sit and watch a film about you, about your life, about your love,” Priscilla said, becoming visibly emotional: “Sofia did an amazing job. She did her homework, we spoke a couple of times and I really put everything out for her that I could.”

When asked about the comparisons of both Elvis roles by E! News, Elordi gushed about Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis while also calling out the comparisons. “I think it would be a killer double feature. I don’t know why people are making it a bloodsport returning to the Colesium, it’s f—king absurd.” He also confirmed to Extra TV that he did not approach Butler for advice for playing the same musical figure as him.

So what does Jacob Elordi’s Elvis voice sound like and what does Austin Butler’s sound like? Hear them both below.

Jacob Elordi’s Elvis Voice

He talked to Jimmy Fallon about the audition process and how he didn’t think he would get the role. “Sofia had sent me these sides that said Elvis, and I kind of was just like, ‘There’s just no chance that this is happening,’” Elordi recalled. “So I watched this clip of him when he came back from the Army in Germany and I read the lines for like 15 minutes and then shot two takes, not thinking that it would go anywhere.”

Coppola ended up liking Elordi’s rendition. “The whole time I was trying to take [‘Priscilla’] like I was making ‘Blue Valentine’ or something,” Elordi said, referencing Derek Cianfrance’s 2010 drama. “Just like a straight-up relationship drama without Elvis and Priscilla, for Sofia Coppola. That was the goal.”

Elordi, Coppola, and Cailee Spainey revealed that Priscilla loved Elordi’s voice from the get-go. “I’m pretty lucky to kind of be in his register anyway,” says Elordi in a Vanity Fair video. “But I think, for me, it was trying to invent what he would sound like behind closed doors, because everyone has a performing voice and a speaking voice.”

Coppola recounted the time Priscilla praised Elordi’s performance. “When we watched the film with Priscilla the first time, what struck her the most was how much his voice sounded like Elvis, so that was a big thrill,” Coppola says. Adds Elordi, “It was a great relief.”

Austin Butler’s Elvis Voice

Watch Austin Butler’s Elvis voice here. In preparation of the role of Elvis, Austin Butler studied Presley for more than two years, isolated from his family to prepare for the role. “What a great guy to get to hang out with every day and learn everything about. I read every book on his life. I watched every frame of footage, every interview he ever gave,” he told LA local news station KTLA5.

“During Elvis, I didn’t see my family for about three years. I was prepping with Baz, and then I went to Australia. I had months where I wouldn’t talk to anybody,” Butler said. “And when I did, the only thing I was ever thinking about was Elvis. I was speaking in his voice the whole time…This is what it takes.”

After his Golden Globe win for Best Actor, the Carrie Diaries star was asked about his accent. “I don’t think I sound like [Presley] still, but I guess I must because I hear it a lot,” Butler told reporters. “I had three years where that was my only focus. So, I’m sure there’s pieces of him in my DNA and I’ll always be linked.”

In an interview on the Graham Norton Show which aired on Friday, February 3, 2023, Butler said he was still in the process of shedding the accent. “I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” he said. “One song took 40 takes!”

In a 2022 interview with ELLE Australia, Butler reflected on the changes to his speaking voice since filming Elvis, comparing it to a stage persona and speculated that the same might happen for future roles because of his personality. “Because I’m a shy person, and when I know that there’s bits of Elvis that I’d have to click into in order to go out on stage and be in front of a ton of people, being surrounded by his name everywhere, there’s triggers,” he said. “You spend so much time obsessing about one thing, and it really is like muscular habits, your mouth can change. It’s pretty amazing. I know that I’m constantly changing. Check in with me in 20 years when I’ve played a lot of roles, who knows what I’ll sound like!”
