Watch Camila Mendes Make Life-or-Death Choices in the New Trailer for “Coyote Lake”

Almost two months after the first teaser dropped, on June 28, Cranked Up Films finally unveiled the first official full-length trailer for Camila Mendes's real-life-inspired thriller, Coyote Lake, which will premiere on August 2. And Teen Vogue has the exclusive.

The minute and a half clip gives us a never-before-seen look at the Riverdale alum as 17-year-old Ester and Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza as her mom, Teresa.

As the mother-daughter duo who run a boarding house and routinely act as vigilantes all the while, the previous teaser took us straight to the intensity (i.e. the pair literally dumping dead bodies in the lake), but this one shows us the duo’s relationship — from their unsuspicious greeting of guests with fake hospitality by day to their avenging shenanigans by night.

“We give those coyotes what they deserve,” Barraza’s character tells Ester in the trailer, referring to the smugglers they encounter at their abode on the Mexican border. “What we do, it’s a good thing. We are getting rid of bad people. We are actually making the difference in the world.” But all hell breaks loose as we are later introduced to Paco (Andrés Veléz) holding Ester at gunpoint.

“Ester and her overbearing mother run a small bed-and-breakfast near the US/Mexico border. One night, two unwanted guests arrive, threatening the safety of everyone. But the two women are hiding a secret, one that may prove the most dangerous of all,” the trailer description reads. Of course, Paco is one of those two unwanted guests, but that doesn't stop Ester from beginning to develop feelings for him — making the mother-daughter pair eventually face a literal life or death conundrum.

“There are certain things that once you get into, you can never get out of,” Paco warns Ester, but she responds with the equally ominous, “You’re going to die if you don’t leave right now.” The trailer hints at the various ploys the family will undertake in an effort to take back control from their captors, but tensions between the duo certainly arise. “This is how you repay me?” Teresa can be heard saying. “She’s hiding something from you,” Paco also tells Ester.

“Don't try to outsmart me, you will lose every time,” Teresa finally proclaims before the screen turns black with a shrill "Mommy?” scream from Ester as she pounds on a mysterious door — setting quite the tone for the thriller this summer.

Camila first shared a behind-the-scenes look at Coyote Lake back in April of 2018, when she posted a few pictures in her Ester-gear to social media and has since opened up about the importance of the project for her. Speaking to Teen Vogue in May, the actor excitedly discussed what taking on such a different role meant for her— describing her character as "young, naive, [and] tomboyish."

And Cami’s description, now paired with the snippets trailer, certainly paints a bigger picture. Watch the extended version of the trailer below:
