Anitta might be one of Brazil’s biggest stars at the moment—she’s the most streamed artist on Spotify in her native country, and boasts a whopping 42.5 million followers on Instagram—but even as she got ready for the 2019 Latin Grammys, which took place in Las Vegas last Thursday, she still seemed pleasantly surprised by her global success given her humble origins. Anitta grew up in one of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, and she never imagined she would be singing in other countries, she said, let alone fly on an airplane.

Now, though, Anitta let us into her hotel room as she got ready for the awards ceremony. She was not only nominated for her recently released album Kisses, but she also performed a tribute to Cuban singer Celia Cruz at the start of the ceremony, singing “La Vida es un Carnaval.” Anitta multitasked in her hotel room before the show, getting her 1920s-inspired hair and makeup done for the evening while she FaceTimed her dog back in Brazil (she has five of them), before she told the story of how she discovered a long-lost brother. Once she finally slipped into her outfit for the evening—a sparkling silver skirt with a high slit and a yellow satin top that resembles a massive bow, by Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika—Anitta promptly ran out the door to get to the red carpet in time (she hates being late). Here, watch how one of Brazil’s biggest pop stars took on Latin music’s biggest night.
