While we bid farewell to Monse, Cesar, Jamal, and Ruby when On My Block ended in 2021, Netflix is bringing fans another lovable core four embarking on a wild adventure with its spin-off series, Freeridge. While we'll be introduced to an all-new cast — including Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ciara Riley Wilson, Bryana Salaz, and Tenzing Norgay Trainor — when the series premieres on February 2, the new show will take place in the same cinematic universe as its predecessor. Some of the original On My Block cast like Peggy Blow, who played Ruby's grandma, Marisol, are also making their return to Freeridge.

If you're looking forward to the new series but wondering if you should start an On My Block re-watch in preparation, we're here to let you know what to expect (sans spoilers, ofc). So, do you need to watch On My Block to watch Freeridge? Find out below.

The short answer is: no, you don't need to watch On My Block to watch understand its spinoff. According to Freeridge co-creator Lauren Iungerich, no prior knowledge needs to be known before tuning in to the new series. While both stories take place in the same universe, there aren't any major plot points that carry over from OMB.

"New viewers can enjoy the show as is. But we have laid in lots of On My Block insider nuggets for the die-hard fans," Iungerich told Netflix's official blog, TUDUM. "We truly hope our On My Block audience connects with this new crew, and we also hope that new fans of the franchise will want to check out where the world started with On My Block. We're hoping that in success, Freeridge might give some new life to our beloved firstborn Freeridge-set show."

As for On My Block Easter Eggs (ahem, did you see the garden gnomes in the trailer?), those aren't entirely off the table in the new show. "I'm a terrible tease, so instead I'll just say there’s a lot of connective tissue between On My Block and Freeridge. For the die-hard fans of On My Block who miss the show — we see you," Iungerich said.
