Australia had just won its first Test match on English soil, and, as a satirical obituary, the British newspaper The Sporting Times declared that English cricket had died, and “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” The full text of the obituary read: “In Affectionate Remembrance of ENGLISH CRICKET, which died at the Oval on 29 August 1882, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P.
