American Horror Story: Delicate is the 12th season of FX’s American Horror Story, a horror anthology series created by Ryan murphy and Brad Falchuk that follows a different set of characters in a new setting within the same fictional universe each season. American Horror Story: Delicate is based on Danielle Valentine’s book, Delicate Condition and follows Anna Victoria Alcott (played by Emma Roberts), an actress who believes there are forces trying to stop her from becoming pregnant. The series also stars Matt Czuchry as Anna’s husband, Dex Harding Jr., and Kim Kardashian as Anna’s publicist, Siobhan Corbyn, who has secrets of her own.

Is American Horror Story: Delicate based on a true story? The answer is no. American Horror Story: Delicate is based on Danielle Valentine’s book, Delicate Condition, which also follows an actress named Anna Alcott, who is desperate to have a family and is convinced she’s still pregnant after her doctor informs her that she had a miscarriage.
“There’s a very specific discomfort, symptoms and horror of what a typical pregnancy can be,” Valentine told Variety in 2023. “I’d been a body horror novelist for 10 years. I got my start writing teen exorcism books, so I have history with that. I thought, if I can do one thing, I can describe this very visceral, painful, oftentimes gruesome experience in a way that other people who’ve tackled this subject couldn’t.”
She also told the magazine about how the story Delicate Condition represents a greater issue in the healthcare system. “One of the most frustrating and poignant parts of the book is watching people tell this woman about her own body, and completely tune her out. In some of these situations, especially with doctors, she’s just bearing it because she feels like she’s somehow broken or not enough,” she said. “That in and of itself is truly terrifying and frustrating.”
She continued, “I didn’t know at first that I was writing about medical gaslighting, I was just putting down my experience with my own doctors. I grew up in the Midwest, and I’m very much a people pleaser. I don’t want people to think I’m a bitch, or to talk too loud or be too aggressive. All of these things that we tell women that they are.”
