The time has come again for the awards-obsessed among us to dominate the conversation, so step aside!! Next in line: the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, the single best predictor of Oscar fates and the penultimate awards season red carpet.
If you’re throwing your tax return into any Super Bowl-style betting rings for the Oscars this year, be sure your ballot is written in pencil. The winners of this year’s SAG Awards will more than likely see the stage again at the 95th Academy Awards in March. In fact, over the last three decades, the actors who took home SAG Awards for the four major film categories–leading and supporting actor and actress–have gone on to win Academy Awards for the same role eight times.
The SAG Awards differ from the Oscars in one crucial way: They are acting specific. There are no awards given to directors, cinematographers, writers, or the like; hence, the Screen Actors Guild. Additionally, there is one key award category at play that you won’t see at other big awards shows: Outstanding Performance by a Cast. This ensemble award is widely considered to be the SAG’s version of a Best Picture award, with the winners often aligning. Only four films *ever* have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar without winning the Ensemble SAG Award: Braveheart, The Shape of Water, Green Book, and Nomadland.
All this to say, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are an important watch, and this year they are easier to watch than ever. For the first time, the ceremony will be streaming online, so let’s see if they can pull in more Gen Z viewers than ever before.
How to Watch the 2023 SAG Awards
The 2023 SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix’s YouTube channel on Sunday, February 26 at 8 p.m. EST.
What to Expect From the 2023 SAG Awards
Presenters at this year’s ceremony include Michelle Yeoh, Zendaya, Jenna Ortega, Ariana DeBose, Colin Farrell, Michelle Williams, Stephanie Hsu, Paul Dano, and more. The show’s ambassadors—considered the future of the industry and role models for future performers—are Ginny & Georgia’s Antonia Gentry and White Lotus’ Haley Lu Richardson.
Andrew Garfield will present the Lifetime Achievement honor to Sally Field, best known for such iconic roles as Gidget, Norma Rae, Sybil, and The Flying Nun. Field has already snagged two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, and three Emmy Awards throughout her career and will add the SAG Lifetime Achievement honor to her collection, right next to her Kennedy Center Honor from 2019 and her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As for her presenter Andrew, you may remember Sally Field playing Aunt May in Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man, so we’re getting a sweet on-screen family reunion.
Jonathan Banks may also break a record! Nominated for his work in Better Call Saul, Banks would be the oldest ever winner of a SAG Award in his category: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
