How to Watch the 2020 MTV VMAs & Party from the Comfort of Your Couch

MTV's Music Video Awards are a go this year, but with some major changes in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moving forward with outdoor performances in front of a limited or no audience, the 2020 VMAs will take place on Sunday, August 30, at 8 p.m. ET. The inimitable host Keke Palmer will be emceeing the night. And as if she isn't reason enough to tune in, there's also a stellar lineup of performances on tap, including those from Lady Gaga and Ariana Grade, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Black Eyed Peas, BTS, Doja Cat, and Maluma.

On MTV or the MTV App

Unsurprisingly, MTV's 2020 VMAs will be available to watch live on MTV, and online at mtv.com, but you're going to need a TV provider to do so. You can also download the MTV app, which is available via the following devices.

As noted by Seventeen, MTV is hoping to reach its largest audience yet and will be broadcasting the awards on a number of channels, including The CW, BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nick at Nite, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, and VH1, giving viewers more options than ever to tune in.

There are plenty of streaming services to choose from that include MTV. The following are just some of the options.

  • Hulu Live TV packages start from $55 a month, which might sound a little pricey, but you get a lot of extra content for the cost.

  • YouTube TV has a package with with 85+ channels, which includes MTV, BET, Comedy Central, and others.

  • Philo packages start from as little as $20 per month, making it a great choice if you're on a budget.

  • AT&T's TV Now's most affordable plan is currently $60 and includes the all-important MTV.

And don't forget the pre-show.

MTV knows that most of us have some extra time on our hands right now, which is why a star-studded pre-show will air right before the ceremony. Starting at 6:30 p.m. ET, the pre-show will be available to watch on MTV, and is set to feature some serious talent.

Performers scheduled include Chloe x Halle, Lewis Capaldi, Machine Gun Kelly, and Travis Barker, among others. Meanwhile, Nessa Diab and Jamila Mustafa will serve as hosts for the event.

Per a press release, the 2020 VMAs will also honor "Everyday Heroes: Frontline Medical Workers," brought to you by EXTRA® Gum, celebrating COVID-19 first responders.
