Washington man's truck was stolen as he robbed store across the street: Police

A Washington man who reported his car stolen Sunday now stands accused of robbery himself, according to KEPR.

Police in Kennewick, Wash., responded a call early Sunday morning when William Kelley, 42, reported his car stolen.

Kelley told police he'd accidentally left his keys on the driver's seat of his 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck, which he said was stolen by a man riding a 10-speed bike. Kelley told authorities he'd returned to his car to find the man throwing his bike into the truck bed, then driving away.

Police investigated surveillance footage from the area, and quickly realized why Kelley had been away from his car in the first place: They said he'd been robbing the store across the street.

Kelley originally told authorities he had been out drinking the previous evening and had left his car in the parking lot overnight. According to police, the evidence said otherwise.

The Kennewick Police Department posted to Facebook with a description of the incident, along with surveillance footage from Sunday morning. It shows the man jump off his bike and drive off in the vehicle as Kelley chases after.

While the video does not show Kelley committing the robbery nearby, police said they were able to determine based on the time and location that he must have been the culprit.

"Video was obtained of the incident and a new fact was discovered," the Facebook post said. "Kelley was at the location because he was stealing items from a business across the street."

Kelley, who already had a warrant out for his arrest, was booked in jail on a new charge of burglary. Despite the twist of fate, police are still trying to look for his car — they ask anyone with info involving the theft to contact them directly.
