Warning Issued for Aldi Ground Beef Due to Foreign Material Contamination

There's a new warning for contaminated beef.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) shared an alert, warning of a raw beef product that is believed to be contaminated with "extraneous material, specifically soft, clear plastic."

The item is described to be "approximately 1.5-lb. plastic tray packages containing 'USDA CHOICE BLACK ANGUS BEEF FROM ALDI, BEEF FOR CARNE PICADA.'" Those who believe they've purchased this specific beef should check for the "use or freeze by" date of Aug. 22, with Julian Date 206 and time stamp between 08:43 through 09:23. The beef also features the number Est. 85M on the back label.

The FSIS notes that some may have the item in their refrigerators and freezers, and should throw it out if found.

No recall is being issued because the product is no longer available for purchase, meaning ALDI grocery shoppers looking to make beef-based meals will be in the clear while making visits to the supermarket chain.

The alert was shared after ALDI notified FSIS that it received a complaint from one of its stores that the plastic was spotted in the product. As of the time of the warning being issued, no injuries or illnesses related to the potential contamination have been confirmed.

This news comes ten days after the CDC announced a potential salmonella outbreak in ground beef purchased from ShopRite locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. 16 had been reported to be ill after eating the beef; six of those had been hospitalized.
