As the leaves start to change and the air becomes crisper, many individuals find themselves contemplating their health and fitness goals with the arrival of fall. One common concern that often tops the list is stubborn stomach fat. Fall serves as an excellent season to embark on a weight loss journey, with its mild weather and an abundance of nutrient-rich foods.

We spoke with Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, LD, to learn about three foods you can start eating this fall to achieve a smaller waistline. Sabat shared that leafy greens, lean proteins, and healthy fats are the way to go.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard, are nutritional powerhouses that can be instrumental in the journey to losing stomach fat. Packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, these greens not only provide essential nutrients but also contribute to a feeling of fullness, which can help curb overeating. Additionally, their low-calorie content makes them an ideal choice for those aiming to create a calorie deficit necessary for weight loss.

"Leafy greens are low in calories but high in fiber and essential nutrients. Fiber helps keep you feeling full, reducing overall calorie intake. Additionally, these vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals, promoting overall health and metabolism," Sabat says.

Include leafy greens in your culinary repertoire by tossing them into salads, blending them into refreshing smoothies, using them as a wholesome addition to soups, or serving them as a nutritious side dish. Their versatility allows them to enhance a wide array of delightful fall recipes.

Lean Proteins

Lean proteins, such as chicken breast, turkey, tofu, and fish, are pivotal in the battle against stomach fat. These protein sources not only help in building and maintaining lean muscle mass, which in turn boosts metabolism, but they also promote a lasting feeling of fullness. By keeping you satiated, lean proteins discourage excessive calorie consumption and snacking, thereby aiding in weight loss, especially in the abdominal region.

"Protein is essential for muscle maintenance and growth, which can help boost your metabolism. It also keeps you feeling full and satisfied, reducing the likelihood of overeating. Lean protein sources are low in saturated fats, making them a healthy choice," Sabat shares.

Healthy Fats

Healthy fats, found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, are paradoxically essential for losing stomach fat. These fats provide a sense of satiety and assist in controlling hunger, reducing the likelihood of overeating. They also play a vital role in supporting overall metabolic health. Healthy fats are known to regulate insulin sensitivity, helping to prevent blood sugar spikes and the storage of excess fat around the abdomen.

"Healthy fats are important for hormone regulation and overall bodily functions. They can also help control appetite and reduce cravings for unhealthy, high-calorie foods. Consuming these fats in moderation can support weight management," Sabat notes.

Incorporate avocado slices into your salads, enjoy a small handful of nuts as a satisfying snack, or incorporate olive oil into both your salad dressings and cooking preparations. Remember to exercise portion control, as fats pack a significant calorie punch.
