Want to go birdwatching? Baton Rouge is likely to see these spring birds

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Birdwatching can be a fun springtime activity with friends, family or by yourself.

One place in Baton Rouge offering guided birdwatching is Burden. Birding at Burden is a monthly birdwatching series with a special bird enthusiast leading a small group through the Birding Loops, according to its website. Admission costs $10 per person and preregistration is required.

The Baton Rouge Audubon Society’s website has a list of places to go birding in the area.

Data analyzed by USA TODAY shows which birds are the most sighted during April in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Here are five birds that can be seen in Baton Rouge.

1. Northern Cardinal

This type of red-colored bird can be seen year-round in Louisiana, according to Cornell Lab’s All About Birds website.

2. House Sparrow

The House Sparrow is another bird that can be spotted year-round in the majority of the United States.

All About Birds said these birds “are chunkier, fuller in the chest, with a larger, rounded head, shorter tail, and stouter bill than most American sparrows.”

3. House Finch

House Finches can be found in “settled habitats, such as city parks, urban centers, residential backyards, farms, and forest edges,” All About Birds said. Birdwatchers can see these birds at feeders, on the ground or perching in trees.

4. Blue Jay

Blue Jays are recognized by their “perky crest; blue, white, and black plumage; and noisy calls.”

5. Carolina Chickadee

Carolina Chickadees are described by All About Birds as having a short neck and large head.
