Since it acquired the Marvel comic book empire in 2009, Disney has helped turn the Marvel Cinematic Universe (better known to fans as the MCU) into a mega-franchise with over a dozen films and TV shows, all occupying a single, shared fictional universe. But for a company known for serialized storytelling and leaving plenty of room for sequels, it appears that the Disney+ hit show WandaVision, which was nominated for five Emmys, may well have been a one-off.

What is WandaVision about?

Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, who reprise their roles from the Avengers films as the titular superheroes Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch) and Vision (her android boyfriend-cum-husband), the show follows the couple through some zany, and occasionally ominous adventures in a TV sitcom-inspired world of Wanda's own magical creation—all while outside forces from the larger Marvel universe try to put a stop to them. Perhaps unsurprisingly, considering that the show was the first infusion of new content to the MCU timeline since the events of the 2019 blockbusters Avengers: Endgame and Spiderman: Far From Home, WandaVision's dramatic plot twists and casting surprises had the whole internet buzzing over the implications it could have on the larger MCU and for the future of the show itself.

Will there be a season 2?

Part of a slate of crossover streaming shows from the MCU including Loki, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and What If...?, it wasn't clear at the outset whether WandaVision was designed as a limited series or something ongoing, but prior to the show's finale this spring Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said during a virtual Disney+ panel, "I’ve been at Marvel too long to say a definite ‘No’ to anything as far as a second season of WandaVision." He later added, "The fun of the MCU is obviously all the crossover we can do between series, between films. So it will vary based on the story. Sometimes [the Disney+ shows] will go into a season two, sometimes it will go into a feature and back into a series."

Over the summer, Elizabeth Olsen muddied the waters further in an interview for Variety's Actor on Actor series with Kaley Cuoco, saying that WandaVision is "definitely a limited series," and indicating that there were no plans for a season two. Though she amended, "I mean, I'm saying that. I don't know. I mean, with Marvel, you can never say no. People die..." but added that she would be "shocked" if there was a second season.

Unfortunately for fans craving more of WandaVision's time period jumping genre joy, while the door is technically still open for future installments with the characters, it also sounds as if a season two is unlikely.

Of course, one of the upsides of a shared universe is that, though we may not know precisely what's ahead for WandaVision, we can expect to see some of these characters and the fallout from the show addressed in the MCU. Particularly, Olsen's Wanda has already been announced to return in the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next year, so those looking for another dose of witchy chaos won't have to wait too long.
