'WandaVision' May Only Have One Season, But the Story Is Far From Over

WandaVision recently wrapped up its initial run on Disney+.
The show, which stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, could be just one season. But, as Kevin Feige says, the option is always there.
The series leads directly into several upcoming films, but could always circle back to Disney+.
After a long summer and winter and summer and winter again, we finally returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Disney+’s WandaVision, the first MCU release since Spider-Man: Far From Home over a year ago. And now that the show's inaugural (and possibly only?) season is complete, you're probably wondering about any nuggets you can possibly find regarding Season 2. And we've got you covered on that front.
Picking up after the events of Endgame, WandaVision follows Wanda Maximoff (also known as Scarlet Witch and played by Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as the couple enact various sitcoms from the 1950s onward. The series unfolds like a mystery box. Questions are raised and raised… and raised, until episodes reveal the sleight of hand behind early season magic. (There’s even an actual magic show to reinforce how meta everything already is: we’re watching Vision and Wanda; we’re watching others, like spectators and SWORD scientists, watch Vision and Wanda, etc.)
As expected, there’s much speculation on how, exactly, WandaVision will fit into the next phase of the MCU. The series has already introduced two future Young Avengers with Billy and Tommy. It’s brought in characters from Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor, and Captain Marvel, and likely connected directly to the Doctor Strange franchise. So while the conceit of WandaVision is sitcom, the structure of MCU properties remains expansive comic book.
All that said, will WandaVision live on as its own series with future seasons, or is it merely a prelude to the next stage of the MCU?
Is WandaVision getting a season 2?
There’s no word yet from executives at Disney or Marvel on a possible WandaVision season 2. We may read into the title of WandaVision's final episode in season 1, "The Series Finale" as proof of the show's end. But "WandaVision" was also the name of the show within the show, which has definitely ended. So which show is the title referring to? Damn you, Marvel, and your infinite evasion tactics.
There’s also no word that a season 2 won’t happen.
At Disney+'s Television Critics Association press tour presentation, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige responded to a question about continuing the series, saying “I’ve been at Marvel for too long to say a definite no or a definite yes to anything.” Marvel doesn’t need to tease or bait viewers for sales—the brand sells itself. Still, the answer is probably as self-serving as it is brutally honest. Feige did go on to explain why projects are often left dangling:
“We are developing all of these shows the way we’re developing our movies — in other words, when we start with a movie, we hope there’s a Part 2, we hope there’s a Part 3. But we aren’t factoring that into Part 1; we are trying to make something that will hook people enough and that people will enjoy enough that they will want to revisit and want to see the story continue. So that is the way we’re proceeding on television as well.”
In short: Marvel always keeps its options open. While they may not always storyboard past the first film or the first season, they'll leave enough lose ends to possibly connect to their ridiculously large universe; leaving lose ends shouldn't bee too difficult. One of those lose ends will likely be the future of Wanda.
When asked about season 2 in an interview with Elle, Olsen did hint at future developments. “The reason it’s a sitcom shows itself later in the show. When Kevin [Feige] told me, it didn't feel so bizarre. It felt like a great way to start our story.”
Whether she means “start our story” as in prelude the developments of the first season or set up future seasons—that important distinction—is still unclear. What does seem clear, however, is that WandaVision won’t be a wait-and-see decision for Marvel; with every franchise so meticulously crafted, either season 2 is already in the works, or it will not exist.
What will WandaVision season 2 be about?
Regardless of whether or not WandaVision sees another season, its storyline will ultimately continue. Olsen will appear in the upcoming MCU film Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, currently filming in London and directed by horror and superhero veteran Sam Raimi. Olsen has said that WandaVision is basically a “tee-up” for this film.
Where that leaves all the other characters from WandaVision, however, remains unclear. What makes Marvel properties unique is there aren’t rigid barriers between franchises. So while WandaVision may not continue the sitcom shenanigans, we won’t necessarily be done with its many characters—and certainly not with the consequences of its storyline.
The post-credits scene at the end of the WandaVision season 1 finale teases an even larger cast of future heroes. In the scene, Wanda, now Scarlet Witch, hears the voices of her sons Billy and Tommy—the boys, it seemed, had been obliterated forever. But in the Marvel comics, Billy and Tommy are merely trapped by the foe Mephisto. Their escape sets them off on an identity journey and, ultimately, toward the the group of heroes known as the “Young Avengers.”
Perhaps the “season 2” of WandaVision will simply be the story of Billy and Tommy, or, rather, Wiccan and Speed.
Though, there is one character we may have to truly say goodbye to after WandaVision: Vision. He is, for now, dead dead. Still, his body continues on in the form of White Vision, and after White Vision and Vision Vision's floating philosophy seminar, whose really to say what makes Vision "Vision." For now he's dead, and even dead dead. But he's not yet dead dead dead. Marvel always keeps its options open.
