Walter Chiapponi's Blumarine Debut Doesn't Stray Far From the Brand's Y2K Aesthetic
Walter Chiapponi made his debut as creative director of Blumarine on Friday during Milan Fashion Week. And he seems well aware of what works for the brand: For his inaugural collection, he kept its well established Y2K-aesthetic alive, perhaps with a bit of refinement.
Blumarine has become synonymous with the early 2000s aesthetic, especially over the past few years under former Creative Director Nicola Brognano — whether the look was "roughed-up" with utilitarian twists or for a "hot girl" via high slits and halter neck tops. For Fall 2024, Chiapponi invokes an eclectic mix of early-aughts staples, like cheetah prints, camisole slip dresses, pom-pom trimmed cardigans and track pants.
But his take on the era is a departure from Brognano's in its palette and mood: While Brognano often went for faded hues and monochromatic ensembles, Chiapponi takes liberty with a wider range of colors and forgoes some of the brand's more recent signatures (like butterfly motifs). Instead, he adds a touch of refinement through a focus on tailoring and elegant accessories, like opera gloves (in punchy yellow).
