Walt Disney Animation Studios Production Workers Vote to Unionize

Following on from VFX artists at Marvel voting to unionize, Walt Disney Animation Studios production workers have followed suit.

A National Labor Relations Board ballot count took place on Wednesday among 68 voters, which revealed 63 production employees, from production coordinators to production managers and supervisors, voted to join The Animation Guild.

The move began floating about in March when it was revealed that The Animation Studio wanted to help unionize the Walt Disney Animation Studios' production workers.

As per their website, The Animation Guild is a union of artists, writers and technicians making animated films, TV shows, and content. They have been around since 1952, helping animation workers get decent wages and better working conditions by using the strength of collective bargaining.

Hollywood is facing strike action across the board, with the WGA only recently securing a deal after a 148-day strike. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined them on July 14 and is currently on day 111 of asking for a fair deal.

With production workers unionizing, it means they will be able to begin bargaining a first contract.
