As people are practicing social distancing amid the COVID-19 outbreak, many are looking into getting essential items like groceries via delivery and pick-up services. Even if you're a die-hard Walmart fan, however, you may not be aware that the store has its own system for ordering pickup.

To help those who may be new to the game, we rounded up everything you need to know before you place your first Walmart order via the grocery app.

How do I place an order for Walmart pick-up or delivery?

Simply go to their Grocery site or download the grocery app from your phone's app store. There you'll be prompted to create an account, as well as select a delivery address or pick-up location and a time slot. They recommend you do this before starting an order since spots fill up so quickly. Pickup and delivery availability can vary by location, so this will also let you know if either is available in your area.

Also, the first time you place an order, they'll ask if you want some tips for ordering, which we highly recommend. You can also check them out here. Some app-specific bonuses include marking favorite items for easy re-ordering, setting Siri shortcuts, and tracking your order.

What is the difference between pickup and delivery?

Depending on availability and your location, you can choose between pick-up and delivery for that day or the following day, which can make spots kind of tough to snag. Be sure to check back often, especially first thing in the morning.

If you choose pickup, it's free, but you'll have to show up at a scheduled time at your selected Walmart location. Employees will load your trunk with your groceries and that's it!

If you choose delivery, you'll incur a charge of around $8. You can also sign up for Delivery Unlimited, which is $12.95 a month or $98 a year. If you choose this option, you'll definitely want the Walmart app because you'll be notified when your driver leaves and you can track their progress through the app, too. If you're cool with it, they can simply leave your groceries at your door step as a form of contactless delivery.

How do I start shopping?

Once you create an account and get a time slot, you can start searching different Walmart departments and add items to your cart by clicking the "add to cart" button. Oh, and depending on what you want, make sure you either enable or disable substitutions for the order in case your store is out of something.

You'll have to hit a $30 minimum and since availability can be scare, it's better to do orders in larger batches rather than smaller, frequent ones. It's also worth noting that you cannot use coupon codes other than Walmart's refer-a-friend promotion (more on that below).

Once you're done shopping and you've hit your minimum, double check that you have everything you need, that your delivery or pickup location and time are correct, and then check out.

Are there any promotions I can use?

Walmart has a referral program that can save you and your friends money on grocery orders. Go to this site to receive your own personal referral link. Send the link to your friends and once they complete their first order, you’ll receive a $10 promo code for your next order.

Another way to save if you shop at Walmart often is through a store-affiliated credit card, which give you 5 percent back.
