I'm sleep-challenged. When I don't pay attention, my sleep can go off the bedrails. Triggers include any sudden work-life imbalance, pain issues, anxiety over the state of you-name-it or a mashup of all of the above.

At these times, I press Pause and assess: Am I eating well? Am I caring for my body? Am I winding down properly? Am I comfortable? Am I able to tune out?

I answered "No" to every single question recently after clocking a pathetic four hours of sleep. I quickly added a few sleep tools — some new, some tried and true — to my arsenal. Walmart+ was ready to serve with same-day delivery.

Walmart+ will bring groceries and all your holiday emergency needs (turkey! gifts! tape!) to your door...fast. Enjoy a risk-free 30-day trial after filling out a short survey. (Once those 30 days are up, you may continue the service for $13 per month or $98 per year — your choice.)

Hot tip: Walmart is granting early access to Black Friday deals to Walmart+ members. If you get your holiday shopping done early, you'll get even more sleep because you won't have anything left to worry about.

What you eat in the evening affects how you sleep — too much of anything can keep you up, but a bit of the right thing can enhance your sleep. Experts say almonds help.

This one-pound bag of melatonin, tryptophan, calcium and magnesium adds up to one excellent evening choice. In moderation, of course. One ounce about 30 minutes before bed usually sets me right.

(Speaking of tryptophan, you can get your holiday turkey delivered too!).

I often forget about the benefits of a goodnight yoga sesh. A fresh, new Berry-colored yoga mat rolled up beside the bed is an excellent visual reminder to take a moment to practice. Working out those last few kinks preps the body and setting an intention readies the mind for restorative sleep.

The nonslip, reversible mat from Gaiam is extra-thick (5mm) for maximum comfort. Careful, you might even fall asleep right there.

A proper pillow

Rest Haven Gel Memory Foam Pillow, Set of 2, King

Cradle your head and neck. (Photos: Walmart))

My husband conks out when the head hits the bed. It may be the one thing I am most envious of in life. All my pillows (I've tried several) cause neck strain. I've spent exhaustive hours in PT with cervical spine issues. A rolled-up towel under the neck helps, but it's time for a less cumbersome solution: a proper pillow that gives real support.

The highly-rated Rest Haven Temperature-Regulating Gel Memory Foam Bed Pillows fit the bill. I dig the cooling gel aspect too as I'm entering a phase of life where I "sleep hot."

A single pillow is pricey, but this two-for-$60 deal is a steal. Besides, my husband is due for a fresh pillow too after all that awesome sleeping he's doing [rolls eyes].

A little quiet...

HoMedics Soundspa Relaxation Sound Machine

Let nature lull you. (Photo: Walmart)

All too often, the sounds of blaring trains, swooping planes, racing bikes and booming car stereos keep me up at night. My husband's snore happily joins the cacophony. Even on quiet nights, I lay awake anticipating them. I don't like shutting myself out completely with earplugs, but an immersive soundscape soothes me to slumber.

Enter HoMedics Soundspa Relaxation Sound Machine, designed to calm with a choice of six rhythmic nature sounds — from the ocean to the rainforest. If you don't want it playing all night long, simply program it to shut off after 15, 30 or 60 minutes. It's on sale now for just $22 (was $25).

Note: Supply chain shortages are affecting electronics, among other sectors, so we're not sure how long these will be in stock. To be frank, you snooze, you lose.

I have a pair in black (bought some for family members too), but this cute pink-and-tortoise-shell pair is on sale for just $20 (was $30)!
