Is Walmart Open on Thanksgiving 2023?

Thanksgiving is the favorite holiday of many people. We get to celebrate meaningful time with our family and loved ones and also eat so many delicious foods. We love turkey dinners and all the starchy sides, but there’s also a whole lot of last-minute errands and shopping to do in preparation for the holiday. With that in mind, you’re probably wondering about Walmart Thanksgiving hours, as you hope to fit in all those last-minute needs on this major national holiday.

What Are Walmart’s Thanksgiving Hours?

Many stores are closed on Thanksgiving in order to give their crew much-needed breaks and time with loved ones. This is especially true for stores that are known to go big on Black Friday specials, as they need to prepare.

Unfortunately, you are not in luck if you need to grab potatoes or paper goods at Walmart on Thanksgiving. Beginning in 2020, the chain made a significant change to store hours. Since that year and every Thanksgiving since, Walmart has been closed on Thanksgiving Day.

“Our people make the difference,’ and that’s never been more true than it is right now,” commented Dacona Smith, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Walmart U.S., in a statement on the Walmart website. “Closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day is one way we’re saying ‘thank you’ to our teams for their dedication and hard work.”

That’s not to say you are entirely out of luck if you have Walmart needs over the long Thanksgiving weekend. It will be open during regular hours the day before Thanksgiving, which at most locations is 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. However, it’s always a good idea to check out the store locator on the company’s website to get the specific hours at your nearest location for the day before Thanksgiving and also the day after, considering there might be special Black Friday hours. Remember, you can always shop online 24/7 if there’s anything you need to buy on Thanksgiving Day.  

One way to save some time this Thanksgiving if your favorite retail or grocery spots are closed is to order a Thanksgiving meal early for pickup. There are lots of great spots offering Thanksgiving dinner to go in 2023.
