Walmart Launches Virtual Summer Camp and Drive-In Movie Theater to Help Families Make the Most of Summer

If you’re looking for a new way to keep your kids active this summer, Walmart is here to help. The company recently launched Camp by Walmart, a free online destination filled with activities, games and challenges for kids who are unable to attend traditional camps in person this year.

The free camp, which is run by a variety of celebrity counselors including Neil Patrick Harris, Drew Barrymore, LeBron James and Idina Menzel, began on July 8 and can be accessed through the Walmart app. The program includes 50 activities, “The Great Family Challenge” (featuring various family-bonding activities), a morning kick-off with head counselor Neil and an arts program called “Smarts and Crafts.”

“Summer hasn’t really felt like summer yet, and I know I hear every day, ‘Mom, I’m bored!’” Janey Whiteside, chief customer officer for Walmart said. “Through our digital means and vast footprint of stores, we’re hoping to bring some summer fun to families across the country. We know Walmart plays a role in our communities that extends far beyond getting them necessary supplies, and we see that now more than ever.”

The camp isn’t the only summer alternative Walmart is offering families. The company is also working with Tribeca Enterprises and transforming 160 of its store parking lots into contact-free drive-in movie theaters where customers can safely gather to watch movies programmed by the Tribeca Drive-in team.

According to the website, the drive-in tour will begin in August and run through October and will “include hit movies, special appearances from filmmakers and celebrities and concessions delivered right to customer vehicles.” How fancy.
