Inflation has affected many facets of our lives — especially the cost of groceries. Food has become so expensive that people are doing whatever they can to cut costs at the grocery store. Since last summer the prices of a few grocery staples have dropped (including eggs, fresh fruit, and baked goods), but grocery prices are still generally high across multiple stores, which is why we love picking up weekly essentials at places like Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Aldi.

And now Walmart might make its way into your regular grocery rotation, as the company just announced that prices of groceries are being lowered to pre-inflation levels. “In food, prices are lower than a year ago in places like eggs, apples, and deli snacks, but higher in other places like asparagus and blackberries,” explained Doug McMillon, president & CEO of Walmart in an earnings call. “Dry grocery and consumables categories like paper goods and cleaning supplies are up mid-single-digits versus last year and high-teens versus two-years ago.”

John R. Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., chimed in with some weekly staples that have seen price drops. “We took our French bread back to $1 which had been $1 for a long time and went up as inflation hit the market,” Furner said. “And we’re seeing results of that running about 40% over last year, so customers immediately responded. Rotisserie chicken is another one. That price has come down by $1.”

Walmart execs know their customers; they know that products like eggs, fruit, and bread are non-negotiables when it comes to grocery shopping. It seems as if the brand is aiming to work with their regulars rather than against them and realizes that when it comes to saving, every little bit counts.
