Wall Niches Are Trending: Here’s How They Can Enhance Your Space

No longer limited to the shower, modern wall niches offer up so much style (and storage).

For years, homeowners have only seen wall niches as convenient, built-in shower shelves. But they have so much more potential: Now, niches are moving outside the bathroom, transforming into a modern and affordable way to spruce up any space.

Niches bring style along with function—they can serve as a place to store your plants, display your artwork and trinkets, and even replace your nightstands. If you're not able to add traditional wall storage elements or decor, niches offer a space-saving solution. They also allow you to add color or create a bold accent wall (a popular home trend in itself) that doesn’t require painting or wallpaper.

Creating a niche on your own is a fairly simple process: Purchase a pre-designed niche shelf online for a space that’s already carved out, or you can build one to match the color, texture, and material of your wall.

On TikTok, creator @thefrenchfolk demonstrated how she made a DIY arched version to hold an elegant vase, in a video that has nearly 40,000 likes. "I wouldn't be able to just stop at one," one user commented.

Style your niche with your favorite decor items, candles, and books, just like you would with a regular shelf. Add one to your entryway to use as display case for artwork, or put one in your bathroom or powder room to add space for extra toiletries. In a kitchen, a wall niche can provide an intentional place for spices, mugs, food containers, and cookbooks. Building a niche around a window puts a focus on the natural light in your room—ideal for one that holds live plants. Otherwise, you can add lighting from the inside to gently highlight the items on display.

A niche, depending on size, will usually cost you from less than $100 to a few hundred dollars. Because it's not too pricey, it's an ideal project for upgrading your space with a stylish statement feature that won’t take too much time to build or go way over budget.
