A not-so-hidden talent of mine is finding less expensive versions of designer pieces. Over the last year, one item has lived in my mind rent-free — Gucci’s Elea Perforated Rubber Platform Mules — but I could never bring myself to spend $590 on them, so I let the pipe dream die while I continued drooling over them from afar. My heart said yes, but my wallet said no.

During a recent Target online spree, I did a double take when I found the Wild Fable Brooke Mules. At just $35, they were nearly identical to the designer style I had been pining for, and I put them on the second they arrived at my doorstep. Not only did they look good, but they were comfortable enough to walk in for miles around New York.

I’ve worn the clogs with dresses, skirts, jeans, and even leggings and have yet to find an outfit they don’t coordinate with. The dark taupe goes with everything in my wardrobe, and they’ve landed me numerous compliments from friends and strangers. They’re my solution to the question I often ask myself: What shoe can I wear with this outfit that won’t look too casual but will still be comfortable?

The slip-on style features a rounded toe and a chunky 2.25-inch block heel for a height boost that’s still easy to walk in. The faux leather is cushiony and easy to spot clean with a damp towel and soap if it gets stained or scuffed.

The soles have ample traction, so they’re easy to walk even during rain storms. While my feet tend to slip out of some mules at the slightest sign of sweat, these stay in place. I’m convinced it’s due to the chunky heel, which keeps my foot at an elevated angle. Shoppers agree that they’re stable and supportive, with one person calling the “soft” and “cushiony” shoes “light and surprisingly comfortable.”
