Kensington Palace has just announced Meghan Markle will be walked down the aisle during the royal wedding not by her mother Doria Ragland but by Prince Charles, her future father-in-law. In a statement this morning, the Palace wrote that Markle asked Charles personally.

"Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St. George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day," the Palace said. "The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way."

There was a lot of drama that led to this twist. The Palace originally announced that Markle's father Thomas Markle Sr. would walk Markle down the aisle after her mother Doria Ragland escorted her from her overnight hotel, Cliveden House this morning.

But then Thomas Markle told TMZ on Monday that he'd no longer go to the wedding because of the fallout of his paparazzi photo staging scandal, his heart attack the week before, and because he did not want to further embarrass Markle or Harry. Markle changed her father's mind on Tuesday but ultimately he still could not go as he re-checked himself into a hospital and had heart surgery on Wednesday.

Prince Charles was speculated to be a possible substitute for Thomas Markle and a symbolic way of showing the royal family's solidarity and support of Markle despite her family drama.
