Wait, Why Is October 1st Trending on Social Media?

Even though fall officially starts in late September, October is when those cozy, fall vibes really kick in. If you want to know exactly what October 1st means on TikTok, we’ve got you covered, plus we’ll let you know what you should post and what sound to use, too.

What is October 1st on TikTok?

There are tons of TikTok trends involving dates of the year. You have October 3rd, which is Mean Girls Day and therefore a great time to post anything involving the iconic movie. There’s also September 21st, which had everyone using Earth, Wind & Fire’s song “September" in their videos. And when October 1st hits, it’s the perfect time to feature girl in red’s “we fell in love in october.”

“October 1” on TikTok currently has 7.1 billion views, and the top posts use girl in red’s song.

What do you post on October 1st?

The chorus of “we fell in love in october” has the words:

“My girl, my girl, my girl
You will be my girl
My girl, my girl, my girl
You will be my world
My world, my world, my world
You will be my girl”

Thanks to the catchiness and simplicity of these lyrics, this chorus makes the TikTok sound perfect for posting your girlfriend. So people either post lovely tributes to their girlfriends on Oct. 1, or you have people making videos about how much they’d love to be on the receiving end of these posts (ie. “Oh, if only someone would post me on Oct. 1”).

But there definitely are people who use the sound to share how excited they are about the start of fall and all things Halloween. Even girl in red herself posted some fall aesthetics in one of her TikTok's using the sound. Again, though, the majority of people post about their girlfriends.

What is ‘we fell in love in october’ by girl in red?

girl in red has been entrenched in TikTok trends and a whole TikTok queer code for most of her career. girl in red is the stage name of Marie Ulven, a Norwegian indie-pop artist who started releasing music in 2018. Some of her first songs on Spotify are “i wanna be your girlfriend” and “girls,” which are still among her most popular songs. She’s obviously been out as a queer artist since she started, and because of that transparency and the subject matter of her singles, she became a fast favorite among lesbians and sapphics.

As them reported, this popularity among the wlw (women loving women) community started to create a code word or question involving the artist. “Do you listen to girl in red?” became a coded question for “Are you sapphic/queer/a lesbian?”

While the coded question has died down in frequency and popularity, girl in red’s impact on the wlw community and pop culture at large is still felt. She even opened for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour this past summer for a stretch of shows.

With all of that said, “we fell in love in october” is not only an autumnal hit for absolutely anyone, but it’s also a special song for the lesbian/sapphic/wlw community. And of course, a dreamy song that makes for a heartfelt TikTok.
