UMMMM Why Is 'Sex Education' Ending With Season 4?Samuel Taylor/Netflix - Netflix

True story: I started crying at the most random parts of Sex Education season 4 just because I knew that it was the final season. I feel like all of my fictional, well-sexed teenagers have left the nest! I'm so proud of them. Here's what we know about why Sex Education is ending. When the teaser for season 4 dropped in July, Netflix casually added that it would be the final season, as well. Rude... but not entirely surprising. Let's get into it.

Is season 4 really the last season of Sex Education?

Sadly, yes. "It's the end as we know it," creator Laurie Nunn told Netflix's in-house blog, Tudum. "During that process of writing season 4, it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about ending it. I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time.” According to IMDb, Nunn has another project in development called The Summer House, but I can't find a lot of other info about it on the world wide web, so stay tuned????

Dunn elaborated in an IG post/letter to fans, saying "goodbyes are the worst, but let's celebrate the time we had."

It probably doesn't hurt that several of the cast left prior to the fourth season, including Bridgerton's Simone Ashley, Rakhee Thakrar (who actually does return in one episode), Tanya Reynolds, and Patricia Allison. Then, earlier in 2023 we started hearing that series leads like Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa (the new star of Doctor Who, NBD) wouldn't return after season 4. Though, to be fair, Mackey and Gatwa might have known something we didn't know at the time. It's very possible that the vibe on set was that this was the final season far before the news officially hit our ears. But still, since those departures happened before the cancelation announcement, fans kind of saw this coming. As much as I love Asa Butterfield and Gillian Anderson, I don't want to watch a show about just Otis and his mom. Sex Education is an ensemble show.

What about a surprise season, spin-off, or movie wrap-up?

I mean... never say never. We do live in an age of endless sequels and reboots. But I kind of feel like this is a good place to end it. It's wrapped up! The characters have all graduated from secondary school. They aren't really teenagers anymore! It's rare that a show about high schoolers works when they all go to college and beyond. Not every show can pull off what Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, and Riverdale accomplished. As much as Otis, Eric, Maeve, Aimee, Adam, Ruby, Jackson, and even Isaac's little faces make me want to cry it's time to move on. And maybe I'll start over from season 1 tomorrow. You can't stop me!!
