You heard about the colors of the year and trends of the year, but have you heard about the scents of the year? If your nose wants to know, Febreze has you covered. In 2024—a year heralded as one of romanticism—Febreze is calling the "scent of the year" Romance & Desire.

Febreze has been pegging a defining scent of the year since 2022 with their selection, ember. In 2023, it was mountain, and now, this new scent offering from the brand is sure to inspire closeness and comfort in your home.

Febreze’s Romance and Desire scent has notes of pink rose petals and citrusy sparkling wine. It encourages camaraderie and brings people together for personal bonding and closeness.

Like most Febreze scents, it comes in air fresheners, wax melts, or plug-ins. For small (and sometimes stinky) spaces like bathrooms, closets, and attic spaces, the plug-in is the perfect option to ensure freshness.

You can bring home the scent of the year affordably, too—each item ranges from $3.29 to $9.99.

“With the rise of social media and offices continuing to work from home, we’ve seen an uptick in those craving in-person connection in our digital-focused world,” Rafael Trujillo, a Febreze master perfumer, said in a press release. “Febreze Romance and Desire reminds us of our love for love—it’s a passionate scent that ignites your inner need to bond with others.”

That love could be explicitly romantic, or perhaps it’s the platonic love shared between friends and family or even the love you hold for yourself. After all, we aren’t only focused on scents for our significant others.

We light candles to signify that our cleaning is complete; we spray perfume to add the finishing touches to an outfit; we spray Febreze to trap odor and flip the scent of our homes from grimy to great.

Matching the scent of our homes to the aesthetic of our outfits and the guiding plans for our year is one way to complete the look of our lives. Or, as Febreze says, “ignite your inner passion for connection and spark an intimate mood in every room.”

Explaining the Scent of the Year Selection

It should come as no surprise that Romance and Desire is Febreze’s 2024 scent of the year.

The odor-fighting company doesn’t have the only team of forecasters expecting to see an uptick in romance this year. Etsy forecasted that 2024 would be getting a lot more romantic, too.

“As we look to the new year ahead, we’re captivated by the theme of romance and the growing trend of ‘romanticizing’ life that is emerging, perhaps in response to the unpredictable state of the world we live in,'” Etsy said in a news post.

This year’s top trend predictions indicate that consumers are craving the comfort of a little extra sweetness in their daily rituals, Etsy says. They elevate life’s simple pleasures and create moments of beauty to savor each day.

And it isn’t just Febreze and Etsy teaming up to increase our romance and desire this year. Yelp called 2024 the year of dopamine decor, which has more and more interior designers leaning into big, bright, and happy decorations.
