Wait, Is That a Katniss Reference I Spy?

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has finally dropped its full-length trailer (watch above ^) and fans pretty much immediately noticed what I think we can all agree is a verrrrry clear reference to The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen. To be clear, this movie is a prequel, so Katniss hasn’t even been born yet during its timeframe. But! Filmmakers gave a nod to her character by having Lucy Gray Baird (played by Rachel Zegler) do a version of Katniss’s signature sarcastic bow:

I mean, we love a reference!

Reminder that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is based on the book by Suzanne Collins and takes place decades before the events of The Hunger Games. The story follows Coriolanus Snow as a young man as he mentors Lucy during the games. And FYI, Rachel almost turned down the role.

As she put it in January during an appearance on Happy Sad Confused, “Let me tell you because it’s such an embarrassing story for me. I was offered it in January of last year after wanting it so badly. I didn’t audition, it was just, I got a call from my agent that was like, ‘Francis Lawrence wants you to do this.’ And I met with him for, like, three hours at the Soho Hotel in London. And then he told me that they were filming in Germany and in Poland, and I had just gotten to London and I wanted to disappear because I was so far away from home for the first time ever. And I was away from everybody that I knew and loved and I said no. And I regretted it the second I said it. I had another project lined up that fell through, that got pushed into 2023, and I just kind of put my name back into the mix and got it—and I feel really bad for any of the girls who had…because I put my name back in and they were just like, ‘Yup, okay, cool.’”

The movie comes out November 17 and also stars Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, Peter Dinklage, and Tom Blyth!
