Volunteers turn out in force for Hagerstown and Washington County Earth Day activities

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — Gorgeous early spring weather welcomed Earth Day Monday in Hagerstown — and volunteers were out in force to mark the occasion.

At Doub Woods Park, farmland donated to Washington County to protect it from development, dozens of volunteers were out this Earth Day planting 80 trees.

“We just want to enhance the green space, add more greenery to our park here,” said Alex Reed, Washington County’s watershed specialist.

Over at Hagerstown City Park, scores of Hagerstown Youth Council members were out to help.

“We’re doing garden and stream cleanup as well as tree planting,” said Rachel Paul, council chair. “We’ve been joined by the Antietam Conococheague Watershed Alliance and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to help us today.

Jenny Ha is taking a gap year between high school and college to work with the Maryland Conservation Corps. She said her day in Hagerstown was rewarding.

“It’s a chance to learn about environmental stewardship and natural resource management,” said Ha. “This Earth Day event is right up my alley.”

Susan Simonson with the regional watershed alliance said to her, Earth Day is a day of action.

“It’s a fantastic way to get citizens out, enjoy the environment and make a difference,” said Simonson.
