Adult Basic Literacy Tutor

Open new doors for adults learning to read. Nearly one in six adults struggle with basic literacy skills, impacting their ability to work, support their children with schoolwork and participate in community activities. Adult basic literacy tutoring may include teaching phonics, word recognition, vocabulary, reading comprehension and spelling. You may also help learners with daily living skills, such as reading the articles, filling out paperwork, or studying for the driver’s license test. Meet one-on-one with your learner or a small group. Tutor responsibilities include planning weekly lessons to support your learner’s goals, helping your learner(s) develop confidence, and providing homework activities to encourage your learner(s) to practice their skills outside the classroom. No teaching experience? No problem! VITAL (Volunteers in Tutoring Adult Learners) staff will support you every step of the way with training, mentoring, and an extensive collection of ready-to-use teaching resources. Volunteers for Patient Support

SouthernCare Hospice provides care to patients and families. They provide services to families in their homes, whether that be a private home or care facility. Volunteers play an important role in the lives of their patients and families, providing companionship and support that can help families and patients cope with end of life issues. As a SouthernCare volunteer, you would visit a patient and brighten their day. It is also rewarding to know you have made a difference in someone's life by volunteering. SouthernCare volunteers can participate in activities with patients such as bingo, crafts, letter writing, reading to patients, working puzzles or even painting their fingernails, the options are endless! SouthernCare will train you as a volunteer through reading material and one-on-one experience. Background check, drug screening, and 2 step TB screening required.
