The Voice host Carson Daly shocked viewers last Monday night when he announced that Ryan Gallagher was leaving the show.

The 31-year-old contestant had been a standout classical singer on Kelly Clarkson's team since the beginning of season 19. From the start, the vocalist got both Kelly and Blake Shelton to turn their chairs in the Blind Auditions round when he took on Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion's "The Prayer" with ease and poise. After picking Kelly as his coach, he continued to win out in the Battles and quickly became a fan favorite.

Suddenly though, his run came to an abrupt end on Monday. Oddly, Carson offered no further explanation as to why Ryan departed the show other than he "had to exit." Now, Team Kelly has only four artists left — Desz, Madeline Consoer, Tanner Gomes, and Cami Clune.

So what happened to Ryan Gallagher and why did he leave The Voice?

Ryan has not yet provided a clear explanation for his sudden absence. Initially, fans worried that his departure may have been family-related, since he had previously told the coaches that his mother was hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus. But during last Monday's East Coast broadcast of the show, Ryan clarified on his Instagram Story that he didn't leave because of his mom.

"Thank you everybody for your concern for my family, however everybody’s fine. That’s not the cause of what happened tonight on The Voice," he explained. "I didn’t drop out of the show. Details are still to come. I’ll keep you posted."

NBC reps confirmed to Good Housekeeping that the contestant broke The Voice's "strict COVID protocols" while competing. As a result, Ryan was reportedly not allowed to continue.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we cannot have him continue in the competition and potentially put others at risk," NBC said in a statement.

But in a statement to Entertainment Tonight, Ryan's manager, Michael Catalano, claimed he was removed from the show unfairly: "Last Sunday, Nov. 29, my client Ryan Gallagher, who was a leading contender as part of Kelly Clarkson’s team on the current season of NBC's The Voice, was dismissed by NBC and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios for an alleged violation of the show’s COVID-19 protocol. In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth."

Ryan's manager went on to explain that the contestant took the pandemic seriously, especially since his mother had been hospitalized and in the ICU for three weeks. "It was a scary time for Ryan and his family and he certainly would not knowingly put anyone at risk by not adhering to the show’s COVID-19 policy."

The manager concluded that "there is more to the story" and that at "an appropriate time and place of our choosing, Ryan and I will be able to share the balance of the details, as well as Ryan's side of the story." Michael also said that despite Ryan's exit, the singer is "touched by the massive outpouring of support he has received."

Last Monday night, Ryan posted a cryptic Instagram Story hinting at what had happened. After reassuring his fans that his family was okay, he shared a photo of himself in a tuxedo with the cryptic caption, "2020 you are an interesting one."

If Ryan does speak out on Instagram, like he promised fans he would, we'll be sure to update this post with his side of the story.
