'The Voice' Fans Want to Know Why Nick Jonas Left the Show in 2020

After a quick break, Nick Jonas is back coaching again on The Voice for season 20.
This spring, he'll join fellow panelists John Legend, Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson in the quest to find The Voice's next singing champion. In light of the coaching switch-up, the show's reigning winning coach Gwen Stefani will not be returning for the current season.
Of course, this isn't Nick's first time on the show — the Jonas brother made it all the way to the finals in season 18 with his talented team member Thunderstorm Artis. But during the summer of 2020, the show announced that Nick was walking away. While Voice fans were excited to hear that Gwen would be taking over in his place, many were still understandably bummed about Nick's departure.
"I love Gwen but last season was awesome w/ Nick please bring him back @nbcthevoice," one fan wrote on Instagram. "Nick was so good and will be missed," another remarked at the time.
So, why did Nick Jonas leave The Voice in 2020?
The coaching lineup on The Voice is constantly evolving, so it's not too surprising that Nick left and came back — after all, Gwen has hopped on and off the show several times, coaching in seasons 7, 9, 12, 17, and 19.
So, what was the reason for Nick's absence? So far, Nick hasn't publicly released a statement talking about his sudden exit. It could be that the show just wanted to change things up after season 18 kicked off with the show's lowest-rated premiere to date, according to Deadline.
Then again, the coach switch-up could've had to do with Gwen. The No Doubt leading lady reportedly missed season 18 of The Voice because of her Just a Girl Las Vegas residency. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Gwen canceled her past few Las Vegas shows in April. As a result, Gwen was able to compete on The Voice last fall.
Bottom line, a lot of factors could've contributed to Nick's exit and later return. But what's unclear is if Nick will stay beyond season 20 or switch places with Gwen again in the future. Guess we will see!
