Vogue Collaborates With Nusa Indah on a Set of Swoon-Worthy Surfboards

Women’s surfing is having more than a moment. Last year, the World Surf League committed to equal pay, paving the way for more female surfers to succeed at the professional level. Next year, the sport will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo. And at breaks around the world, more and more girls are making their way into the water. That ground swell set Vogue’s latest product partnership in motion, inspiring a cross-continental collaboration that’s resulted in a limited-edition collection of surfboards.

To land on the right design, Vogue gave surfboard designer Jada Stanley access to the magazine’s archive, where she spent hours combing through vintage covers. She ultimately selected illustrations by Salvador Dali, Georges Lepape, and Eduardo Garcia Benito, each offering a distinct aesthetic. “Next was to design a surfboard shape that would be both practical for avid surfers, as well as best fit for interior application,” Stanley says. She landed on a 6’1” shortboard with a wide nose and pulled in round tail. “The high-gloss polish was the ultimate finish to showcase the art,” Stanley adds.

Stanley has made a name for herself as fashion’s go-to board-maker, with previous collaborations including a collection for Le Sirenuse, and one with Lulu DK for The Cove Atlantis. She runs her company, Nusa Indah, from her home of Forster, New South Wales on the East Coast of Australia, “a sleepy seaside town that triples in population over the holidays due to its geographical beauty.” White sands and world-class waves mean Stanley finds moodboard-worthy moments when she looks out the window.

In a room with a very different watery view at the World Trade Center in New York, Vogue’s director of brand marketing Negar Mohammadi explains that while this might not be the first collaboration readers would predict, it falls in line with previous creative partnerships like AWOK'd Air Jordans and a custom-bred rose. “We want to do things that are unexpected,” she explains. “These collaborations are partly our way of showcasing the diversity of what Vogue really covers.” Whether leaned against a wall or in the ocean, the boards are certainly the best (and most literal) way to ride the Vogue wave.

All boards are priced at $1,500 USD, and arrive with fins and a protective cotton slip. They’re available at nusaindahsurfboards.com/vogue-collection.
