Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge hopes to capitalize on DC metro tourists

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge (VBR) announced a new campaign on Wednesday, April 10 to get tourists to our area.

The marketing campaign pitches the Roanoke area as a “Mountain Metro,” with all the amenities of a big city, set into the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Blue Ridge saw a 26% jump in visitors between 2022 and 2023, according to VBR, and a lot of them were tourists from D.C. looking to escape the city. VBR says D.C. Metro tourists accounted for more than a tenth of visitor spending.

David Aldridge, director of marketing with VBR, says they’re looking to capitalize on that.

“The average visitor coming from Washington D.C. is spending 20% more than they did the previous year,” he said at Wednesday’s announcement. “So these are all indications that, we ran this campaign in this market and in the six-month period following, we saw the increased visitation in visitors spending.”

The campaign will be posted on Amtrak trains, D.C. Metro stations, D.C. buses, and online.
