Where Was The Crown Season 6 Filmed?

In season six, new and returning locations across England, Scotland, and Spain play major roles. Below, explore all of the stately sites and charming places.

Lancaster House in London, England

Featured in every season, Lancaster House's interiors portray those of Buckingham Place on screen. In real life, the Neoclassical mansion is situated near Buckingham Palace and has its own ties to royalty thanks to the Duke of York, who commissioned Lancaster House in 1825. It's typically only open to the public for London's annual Open House Festival, a weekend-long event that allows visitors to tour architectural sites that are usually closed to the public. But it's also possible to virtually tour at any time!

Wilton House in Wilton, England

Bringing Buckingham Palace to life on screen required tapping more than one location. Wilton House, also seen in previous seasons, provided more backdrops for the palace's interiors. The country home has belonged to the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years, and it sits on 22 acres of lush landscaping. The building and its grounds are seasonally open to the public for tours. Avid period drama fans might also recognize the location from Bridgerton, Emma, Pride and Prejudice (2004), and Sense & Sensibility (1995) among many others.

Other notable locations used to depict Buckingham Palace’s interiors in season six include Wrotham Park, which is surrounded by 300 acres of parkland just 30 minutes outside of London, and Elstree Studios in England's Hertfordshire.

Having appeared in previous seasons of The Crown, and other dramas like Pride and Prejudice (2004), Burghley House portrays Windsor Castle. Similar to its off-screen counterpart, Burghley House has royal ties in real life. It was built nearly 500 years ago by Sir William Cecil, Queen Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer. Both the house and the gardens are open to the public, who can admire everything from impeccable painted ceilings to a delicate rose garden.

Somerleyton Hall in Somerleyton, England

While Somerleyton Hall has previously portrayed Sandringham Estate, which was once Queen Elizabeth II's country home, this season it serves as Highgrove House, the family residence of now King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Although Somerleyton Hall is privately owned, it is open for garden tours and events.

Wellington College in Crowthorne, England

For the royal residence of Kensington Palace, which was Charles and Diana's home, then Diana's alone after their separation, the production tapped Wellington College in Crowthorne, England. Opened by Queen Victoria in 1859, the boarding school boasts everything from a large Chapel and historic halls to 400 acres of parkland with vast gardens and courtyards.

Ardverikie Estate in Kinloch Laggan, Scotland

Ardverikie Estate stands in for Balmoral Castle, both of which are Scottish dwellings. Extending approximately 38,000 acres, Ardverikie Estate also includes six holiday cottages on the property that visitors are welcome to book all year round. Anyone who stays in one of the cottages also has the opportunity to book exclusive tours of the main reception rooms of Ardverikie Castle. Built in the 19th century, the Victorian Gothic structure has remained largely untouched since it was constructed.

Scenes at the Hôtel Ritz in Paris, where Diana and Dodi had their final meal before their tragic deaths, were actually filmed at Dartmouth House in London. The Georgian house currently serves as the headquarters of the English-Speaking Union, an educational charity. It's also bookable for weddings, parties, and other private functions.

Canary Wharf in London, England

Season six also transports viewers to Chicago. In reality, Canary Wharf in East London's Docklands area was transformed into the city for scenes with President Clinton.

In previous seasons, filming for the royal family's holidays to far-flung destinations took place in Spain. Naturally, season six followed suit. Scenes with Diana, young Prince William, and Dodi Fayed were filmed on a yacht in Mallorca, while other scenes were shot in Barcelona.

In March 2023, college students at the University of St Andrews in Scotland shared behind-the-scenes photos of The Crown actors filming on campus that went viral on TikTok. In reality, Prince William and Kate Middleton met while they were both studying at that school.

To recreate the wedding of Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles at St George's Chapel in Windsor, The Crown filmed at York Minster, a Gothic cathedral that has gone through various transformations since it was originally constructed between 1220 and 1471. Restored between 1967 and 1972, the structure hosts the largest collection of medieval stained glass in England.
