Today marks the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It's an occasion that, since last spring, has hit gut-wrenchingly close to home for Danielle Moss, founder of The Everygirl and Chicago store Anecdote. In May of 2020, Moss's daughter Margot was diagnosed with Leukemia. Since then, Moss has used her platform to spread awareness of childhood cancers and raise funds for treatment and support—efforts she is continuing this week with a virtual auction to fundraise for Alex's Lemonade Stand.

"Childhood cancer is so underfunded," Moss says. "But it's not rare: This is happens to over 15,000 children in the US every year." That's why, in addition to soliciting donations to Lurie Children’s Hospital (where Margot is receiving treatment), Moss partnered with Alex's Lemonade Stand to provide research grants specifically for children's cancer treatments. From now through Monday, September 6, you can bid through Moss's blog on an assortment of home and kids' items, with winning bids paid to Alex's Lemonade Stand. Some of the items on offer include:

  • A $500 gift card to Serena & Lily (bid here)

  • A storage system from Crate & Kids (bid here)

  • A table lamp from Anecdote (bid here)

  • A $1,000 credit to vintage rug dealer Linda's Barn (source of the rug in Moss's home shown above; bid here)

The auction also includes several kids' items, from play mats to high chairs—view the full list here. To enter, bidders must comment with their bid amount on the auction item's page; when the auction closes on Monday at 8 p.m. CST, the winner has 24 hours to donate their bid amount to Alex's Lemonade Stand to secure the item. In addition to the donated funds, Moss will match up to $5,000 of her own money, citing her belief in the importance of expanding this research.

"Only 4% of the billions of dollars the government spends on cancer research goes toward childhood cancers," Moss notes on her blog. "Hundreds of drugs have been developed and approved for cancer in adults. Of the 34 drugs approved for use in the treatment of childhood cancers, thirty of those drugs were initially approved for adult use only."
