It looks like Virgin River is getting a spinoff series!

According to Deadline, a Virgin River prequel about Mel’s parents from showrunner Patrick Sean Smith is currently in development at Netflix.

The series will tell the story of Sarah, Mel’s late mother, and Everett, the man who was revealed in the season five Christmas special to be Mel’s biological father.

Season six of Virgin River will reportedly serve as an “origin story,” providing a glimpse into the couple’s past via flashbacks of young Everett and Sarah. Casting is currently underway for those roles to appear as guest stars in season six. If all goes according to plan, those actors would headline the Sarah and Everett spinoff.

“What we’re exploring more in season six is who Everett Reid is, what his backstory is, what his connection to Virgin River was when he met her mom and then also what it is today,” Smith told Deadline, adding the upcoming season will explore the “relationship of Everett with the town as well as Everett and Mel.”

Virgin River stars Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson took to Instagram last week to reveal that production on season six had already commenced.

Potential spinoff aside, season six of Virgin River has some explaining to do after Part 2 of season five ended on one of the most abrupt cliffhangers since the Sweet Magnolias car crash.

After she was initially rejected by Everett, Mel’s wish finally comes true when he shows up on Christmas. In the finale’s final seconds, he started telling her “something important” before he was cut off mid sentence.

Breckenridge previously told Deadline that she actually has no idea what her on-screen father was about to tell her.

“No, I’m sure that’s the wonderful magic of television where they don’t actually have to tell you, and they can figure it out later,” she revealed. “I think it’s had a few different iterations at this point. I don’t know where they ultimately landed.”

This is a developing story.
