The drama in Netflix's Virgin River gets bigger and better by the episode. But even in a town that thrives on small town gossip and secretive romances (hint, hint, Doc and Hope), there's still a big mystery about Mel's (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) past that has fans talking: What happened to her husband, Mark (played by Daniel Gillies)?

From the very start of the show, it's been evident that Mel has experienced a tragic loss of her own: Her husband Mark died shortly after the loss of their baby. As Mel is reminded by her past (say, when her sister-in-law drops in for a surprise visit during season 2), she unveils the truth about what really happened to her husband, including why she still blames herself for his sudden death.

Mel doesn't open up about her husband's death until Jack convinces her to do so. While dropping off Mel's lost glove at her house, Jack spots her wedding band, causing him to think the worst. She plays it coy at first, telling Jack that she merely decided to move on. Shortly after, she reveals that her husband passed away: "My husband is dead. It was my fault."

As the episodes play out, she explains why she feels guilty for her late husband's death. But first, it's important to know the entire situation at hand: In the year's leading up to his death, the couple had been struggling with infertility. They were elated when Mel got pregnant through IVF, but the baby was stillborn, resulting in Mel's postpartum depression. Per her doctor's recommendation, Mel pleaded with Mark to take the surrogacy route, but he felt he needed more time to recover.

Still, Mel and Mark entertained the idea of trying IVF again, despite their failing marriage. During a heated argument about whether or not they should go for another round of IVF, the couple got into a terrible car accident, ultimately leading to Mark's death — hence why Mel feels she is to blame.

Season 2 tackles the one-year anniversary of Mark's death and it's clear that Mel is still grappling with grief ... even if she has her eyes set on Jack.
