Virgin Galactic’s Galactic 02 Mission: A New Era of Space Exploration

The 10th of August 2023 was not just another day. It was the day when Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo-class VSS Unity set off on its Galactic 02 mission, ushering in a new era in space tourism and shattering nearly a dozen records in its trailblazing journey.

Having had the privilege to witness this monumental event firsthand, it was evident that the Virgin Galactic team operated with the precision of a Swiss watch and the passion of artists sculpting their magnum opus. The energy, the anticipation, and the collective breaths held until the VSS Unity's successful re-entry were palpable.

Virgin Galactic's mission has always been clear – democratizing space travel.

Although we are still decades away from fully realizing this truth, especially with a seat on the VSS Unity pegged at a whopping USD 450,000.00, the Galactic 02 mission has significantly strived towards that dream.

The Galactic 02 flight was notably the second commercial and seventh overall spaceflight by Virgin Galactic. Unlike its predecessor, Galactic 01, which transported Italian Air Force astronauts and researchers, Galactic 02 proudly carried space tourists. These were individuals on a spaceflight, not for work, but for the sheer joy and thrill of the experience.

The crew for this mission was not just a group of individuals but a constellation of trailblazers:

- Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers earned double distinctions as the first mother-daughter duo and the inaugural female astronauts from the Caribbean to venture into space.

- Young Anastatia, eighteen years of age, earned her place in history as the youngest individual to touch the void.

- Jon Goodwin, an Olympian, became the first from his cadre to soar among the stars.

- The mission celebrated women in space, being the first majority female spaceflight and marking the highest number of women aboard a single space mission.

- Goodwin's journey was doubly inspiring as he became the second individual diagnosed with Parkinson's disease to experience zero gravity.

- The mission also had aboard the third oldest individual to embark on such a journey.

- Schahaff and Mayers added another feather to their caps, becoming the 6th and 7th black women to embrace space's vastness.

The preparations were nothing short of a masterclass in spaceflight readiness.

In their gleaming suits, the astronauts rehearsed their boarding, their determination mirrored in every step they took. The third floor, designated 'Astro,' was out of bounds for filming. This enigmatic floor houses the astronaut training area and the iconic book that astronauts sign (with Richard Branson having the honor of being entry number 001) after completing space travel, and, importantly, the suits - the armor for the brave souls venturing into the great unknown.

Under Mike Moses's, President of Virgin Galactic Flight and Safety and former NASA alumni, adept leadership, Mission Control became the nerve center of the operation, ensuring seamless communication and orchestration. And with experts like CJ Sturckow and Kelly Latimier piloting the vessel, the intricate ballet of spaceflight was made to look deceptively easy. Mike Moses has skin in the game beyond running operations on the ground. His wife, Beth Moses, former NASA employee and Virgin Galactic Chief Astronaut Instructor, was onboard Galactic 02 to oversee the new astronauts.

The hangar was abuzz with anticipation as the time approached for the actual flight.

The astronauts walk the red carpet like celebrities at an award show, a send-off worthy of the inherent risk associated with space travel. Once in flight and as the mothership and spaceship, VSS Unity ascended to 47,000 feet in anticipation of the release of the VSS Unity. The journey, lasting 60 minutes to altitude, culminated with the Unity's release at a speed of Mach .50. From .50 to Mach 1 in just 10 seconds, the vessel then made a 10-second vertical turn, burning for another 50 seconds straight up, achieving Mach 3. This intense motion, thrice the weight of gravity pushing against one’s chest, was a small price to pay for the magnificent view that followed – four uninterrupted minutes in space.

The re-entry, though lasting 15 minutes, was no less dramatic. The Unity utilized its 'feather' system, turning its tail to a 60-degree angle, to enter Earth on its spine, eventually rotating to its belly, allowing it to slow down efficiently. Even at 50k, the spaceship was still supersonic, seamlessly transforming into a glider.

Upon landing, an electrifying celebration erupted as the newly minted astronauts embraced their families and seamlessly transitioned to engage with the media.

Witnessing this milestone firsthand was an awe-inspiring spectacle, showcasing Virgin Galactic and Richard Branson’s undying commitment to democratizing the cosmos.
